Denise Lim: What Makes You Feel Alive?

Denise Lim: What Makes You Feel Alive?

To walk and wonder is to allow oneself to see the endless possibilities in everything, whether big or minute, and to realize that life is indeed still beautiful if only we take a minute to look around and rejoice in its magnificence.

What makes you feel alive?

Is it the chaotic symphony you hear in the streets of a bustling city? Or the feeling of sweet success after closing a big pitch, a monumental sale? For some it may be holding your child for the first time and hearing him let out a loud cry of welcome into the world. Whatever it is, it must feel good.

Different people have different answers to a question that we rarely ask ourselves, as we often get lost in the hustle and hassle of what we call life. But for me, it is a question that I found the answer to first even before having had the chance to ask myself.

Standing atop one of the highest peaks in the country, amidst a sea of clouds and witnessing one of the most beautiful miracles of everyday, I felt alive. Then and there I realized how amazing it is to feel small against the vastness of this world and of life. It may seem odd to yearn for such but for me, it was the most natural and exhilarating feeling I have experienced to date. And time and time again, against every gorgeous backdrop I have had pleasure to bask in in the past couple of years, the experience of seeing this world’s wonders never fails to make my heart happy. We are ever so lucky to have the chance to breathe in fresh air, to be in awe of how the sun and sky paint colorful hues of pastels, and to hear each wave, glistening in every shade of cool blue, crash against the white sandy shore. Yes, it is good to be alive.

walk and wonder

Then and there I realized how amazing it is to feel small against the vastness of this world and of life.

Hiking up the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, driving by one of the highest peaks in Bhutan and overlooking a stunning valley, feeling the powerful rush of water from an Icelandic waterfall, and traveling for more than 24 hours by air, land and water to one of the most remote but breathtaking islands in the Philippines are just some of my favorite travels to date. With every journey I took, across the world, from one continent to the other and around the 7,107 amazing islands in the country, the greater the desire to share the beauty of the world grew in me. Each step and kindled feeling made me want to continue walking and wondering but this time, with possibly a thousand other more people who are longing to see the beauty of the world one picture at a time, captured through the eyes of another wandering soul.

So, Walk & Wonder was born. It is the brainchild of a constant yearning to discover what life and this world have to offer, heightened by the desire to feel alive once again and hopefully, to keep that fire burning until the next journey. It is through traveling, whether abroad or in the most beautiful of places, the Philippines, that I have gained the energy to forge through life with much vigor and passion.

Seeing how big of a world there is beyond my four walls keeps me grounded, grateful and forever hopeful of what is and what can possibly be in this lifetime. Through this and the photos shared, I hope to be able to ignite the same emotion of gratitude and joy as well as show to the rest of the world how proud we are to call Philippines, our home.

To walk and wonder is to allow oneself to see the endless possibilities in everything, whether big or minute, and to realize that life is indeed still beautiful if only we take a minute to look around and rejoice in its magnificence.
